“Startup entrepreneurship has a lot in common with what it takes to be an athlete on a playing field: excellence, competitiveness, persistence, speed, teamwork” says Anita Huang, team captain of Taiwan Startup Stadium (TSS), the new startup cluster launched this May in Taipei. The initiative is supported by HeadStart Taiwan, a project driven by the Taiwanese Development Council to develop and foster the country’s tech ecosystem. By coming to Silicon Valley, TSS is on track with its mission: help Taiwanese startups go global.

After years of stagnation, a newly energized Taiwan tech and startup economy is continuing on an upward path, with numerous new financings, funds and M&A deals for emerging companies far afield from its old-time focus on semiconductors.
The latest example of the maturing of Taiwan's startup scene is the mid-August acquisition by Taipei-based mobile Internet service GMobi of its long-term partner, mobile performance ad network MassiveImpact in Israel. The deal with MassiveImpact, backed by Softbank and SingTel Innov8, seeks to expand their services for app developers in the U.S. and China.

Slush Asia took place on May 13th and 14th at the Makuhari Messe exhibition halls in Chiba. Among 60 nominees fiercely competing during the 2-day event, Taiwan-based SkyREC — which is developing an analytics platform for real stores — won this year’s startup pitch competition. Taiwanese startups won for two consecutive years following Slush Asia 2015 last year.
